Meet the owner

“I take care of people. I also cut trees.”

— Grant Weiss, Owner & Climber · Portage County Tree Service

Grant has been doing tree work for ten years. He started Portage County Tree Service in 2022 out of Windham, and he still climbs every job himself.

He got into this because he loves it — being outside, working with his hands, and solving the kind of problem where the answer is a rope, a saw, and knowing exactly where a limb is going to swing. The trees other companies would rather not deal with are the ones he wants.

It stays a small operation on purpose. One to three people depending on the job, so the work is done by people who actually care how it turns out. Grant is on-site, doing the cutting, and answering the phone when you call back.

Ask around and the thing people mention isn't the tree — it's what he did after. Helping with something unrelated because he noticed it needed doing. Not charging for the small stuff. Leaving the place cleaner than he found it. That's the business.

Why choose us

Why people call Grant back

Most of the work comes from repeat customers and the people they tell.

  • Your property ends up better than we found it

That is the standard every job gets measured against. The yard you get back should look better than the one we pulled up to.

  • We clean up better than anybody

Brush hauled, debris gone, yard raked out. Stumps get cut flush to the ground, not left shin-high in the lawn.

  • You talk to Grant, not a call center

Grant answers his own phone. If he is up a tree when you call, he calls you back. Owner on every job, on the ropes himself.

  • Never damaged a property

Not once. Careful rigging, an honest read on what a drop will do, and the patience to take a tree down in pieces when that is the right call.

  • Rigging and climbing worth watching

Grant takes the trees other companies pass on. Customers have stood in the yard, watched a tree come down in controlled pieces, and called him a wizard.

  • Fully insured

Full insurance coverage on every job, so nothing about hiring us puts you at risk.

  • We take care of people, not just trees

Grant has set up WiFi boxes, pulled out fences, and dug up rocks for customers, free, because he was already there and it needed doing.

One job that says it all

Portage County, Ohio

Waist-deep in freezing water, in the middle of a blizzard

A tree was interfering with the flow at a water plant and needed to come out. Grant took the job. Then the weather turned, and a December blizzard rolled in on top of it.

He finished the job.

He ended up standing waist-deep in freezing water, cutting through the trunk a few inches at a time to free up the flow, with the storm coming down around him. There was no version of that day that was comfortable.

That's the whole point of telling it. When something needs doing, it gets done — not rescheduled until the weather improves, not left half-finished. It's the same reason storm calls get answered at two in the morning.

Services

What we do

Trimming and removal are the work — done carefully, cleaned up completely, and priced honestly. If a job needs something we don't do in-house, we say so.

Tree Trimming & Pruning

Our favorite work and what we do most. Careful, structured pruning that opens a tree up, takes weight off the limbs that need it, and leaves the shape looking right.

Trimming is the work Grant likes best, and it's what most people call about. Overgrown maples crowding a roofline, limbs hanging over a driveway, deadwood that needs to come out before it comes down on its own — that's the everyday job.

Every cut is made with the tree in mind. We take what needs to go and leave the tree healthy and balanced, not butchered. Where the reach is awkward or the drop zone is tight, we climb it and rig the limbs down rather than dropping weight where it can do damage.

When the truck pulls out, the brush is gone and the yard is raked clean.

  • Crown thinning, raising, and reduction
  • Deadwood and hazard limb removal
  • Clearance from roofs, driveways, power lines, and outbuildings
  • Overgrown trees brought back into shape
  • Rigging and climbing on tight or awkward drops
  • Brush hauled, debris gone, yard raked out

Tree Removal

Full removals, including the trees nobody else wants to touch. Rigged down piece by piece when the space is tight, with a flush stump and a clean yard at the end.

Some trees have to come out — dead, dying, split, leaning the wrong way, or simply too close to the house. We take them down safely, with the right equipment for the job, and the yard is clean when we leave.

Tight backyards, trees over sheds and fences, trees hemmed in by power lines — that's where climbing and rigging earn their keep. Grant lowers the tree down in controlled pieces instead of forcing a drop that puts your property at risk.

Stumps are always cut flush to the ground. If you want the stump ground out afterward, we'll arrange that for you (see below).

  • Full and partial removals
  • Dead, dying, storm-damaged, and leaning trees
  • Technical removals over roofs, fences, sheds, and pools
  • Sectional rigging in tight spaces
  • Stumps always cut flush to the ground
  • Brush hauled, debris gone, yard raked out

Emergency Tree Service & Storm Damage

A limb through the roof or a tree across the drive does not wait for business hours. Call anytime — the phone gets answered.

Storms in this part of Ohio don't give notice. When a tree comes down on a house, a car, a fence, or a driveway, the job is to get it off safely and get you back to normal.

Grant answers the phone at any hour for emergency tree work, anywhere in Portage County and the towns around it: Kent, Ravenna, Streetsboro, Aurora, Garrettsville, and out to about an hour from Windham. If it's urgent, say so when you call and you'll get a straight answer about how fast he can be there.

Storm work is careful work — damaged trees are under load and behave differently than healthy ones. A snapped trunk resting on a roof still has weight pulling in a direction you can't always see from the ground. That's exactly the kind of job experience matters on, and it's why emergency removal is climbing and rigging work, not just chainsaw work.

If the tree hit something and an insurance claim is coming, you'll get a clear written estimate for the work. Every policy is different, so the coverage question belongs to your insurance company, but the paperwork they ask for is the part we can make easy.

  • Trees down on homes, garages, vehicles, and fences
  • Blocked driveways and access cleared
  • Hanging and broken limbs made safe
  • Storm cleanup and haul-away
  • Calls answered around the clock
  • Fully insured, on every job

Dead & Diseased Tree Removal

The emerald ash borer left standing deadwood all over Portage County. A dead or dying tree near the house, the drive, or the road only gets more dangerous the longer it stands.

Northeast Ohio's ash trees were hit hard by the emerald ash borer, and a dead ash is one of the most common removal calls in this part of the county. Standing deadwood is brittle and unpredictable, and a bare tree near a house, a barn, or a road is a hazard that only gets worse with time.

Dead and diseased trees come down differently than healthy ones. The wood is dry and prone to snapping where you don't expect it, which is exactly why this is climbing and rigging work, taken down in controlled pieces rather than a drop that trusts a brittle trunk to fall where you want it.

If you have a tree you've been watching, the estimate is free and Grant will give you a straight answer: sometimes it can wait, and sometimes it needs to come down before winter does it for you.

  • Dead and dying ash, emerald ash borer damage
  • Standing deadwood and hazard trees near structures
  • Diseased and storm-weakened trees
  • Rigged down in pieces, not dropped
  • Honest advice on what can wait and what cannot
  • Brush hauled, debris gone, stump cut flush

Stump Grinding & Removal

Every removal ends with the stump cut flush to the ground. If you want it ground out or removed completely, we arrange it so you only make one call.

On every removal, Grant cuts the stump flush to the ground, not left shin-high in the lawn to catch a mower. For a lot of jobs, that is all people want.

When you want the stump gone completely, ground out below grade so you can seed or plant over it, we arrange the grinding for you through a trusted partner. We don't run the grinder ourselves, and we'd rather tell you that plainly than pretend otherwise. It's honest work by someone we'd hire ourselves, and you still only have to make one call.

Either way you get a straight price up front and a clean yard at the end.

  • Every stump cut flush to the ground, standard on removals
  • Full stump grinding arranged through a trusted partner
  • Ground out below grade so you can seed or plant over it
  • One call handles the tree and the stump
  • Honest about what we do in-house and what we coordinate
  • Yard raked clean when the work is done

Land & Lot Clearing

Overgrown lots, fence lines, and wooded acreage cleared and cleaned up, from a few trees to a whole building site.

Whether it's a building lot that needs opening up, a fence line grown into the woods, or a back acre reclaimed for use, clearing work is about taking down the right trees and leaving the property usable.

Grant works a lot across rural Portage County, so open acreage, hedgerows, and field-edge timber are familiar ground. The trees come down with the right equipment for the site, and the wood and brush get handled rather than left in a heap for you to deal with.

Tell Grant what you want the space to become and he'll walk it with you, give you an honest scope, and a real price for the job, for free.

  • Building lots and homesites opened up
  • Fence lines and property lines cleared
  • Overgrown and wooded acreage reclaimed
  • Field-edge and hedgerow trees taken out
  • Wood cut to length, brush chipped or hauled
  • Site left clean and usable

Brush Removal & Chipping

The cleanup half of every job, and a service on its own. Brush chipped and hauled so the property looks better than we found it.

Cleanup is the part most companies rush, and it's the part Grant is known for. Every trim and removal ends with the brush chipped or hauled and the yard raked out, no debris left behind.

It's also work worth booking on its own. Storm-dropped limbs, an old brush pile that's been growing at the back of the lot, or a season's worth of yard debris, Grant will clear it and take it away.

You get a clean property and a straight price, with no surprise dump fees tacked on after.

  • Brush chipped on site and hauled away
  • Storm-dropped limbs and debris cleared
  • Old brush piles removed
  • Cleanup included on every trim and removal
  • Yard raked out, nothing left behind
  • One honest price, no surprise dump fees

Firewood & Log Removal

Wood cut to length and stacked if you want to keep it, or hauled off if you don't. Your call, either way.

When a tree comes down, the wood is yours if you want it. Grant will cut it to firewood length and leave it stacked so you're set for the season, at no extra charge on most jobs.

If you'd rather not deal with it, the logs and rounds get hauled off with the rest of the debris and the yard is left clean. Some people want the wood, some people want it gone, and either answer is fine.

Just tell Grant which you'd prefer when he quotes the job.

  • Wood cut to firewood length on request
  • Left stacked where you want it
  • Or logs and rounds hauled off completely
  • Your choice, decided when we quote
  • No surprise charges either way
  • Yard raked clean at the end

Our process

How it works

No sales process, no drawn-out back and forth. Five steps, and you know where you stand at every one.

  1. Call or text — anytime

The phone gets answered, including nights and weekends for storm work.

Reach out however you like. Tell Grant roughly what you're looking at — a tree over the garage, a maple that's gotten out of hand, a limb that came down last night. Emergency calls get answered around the clock.

  2. Grant comes out and walks the property

In person, on-site, looking at the actual tree.

Nobody can quote a tree properly from a photo. Grant comes to the property, looks at the tree, checks the drop zones and access, and talks it through with you so you understand what he's recommending and why.

  3. A clear, honest quote — usually on the spot

A real number, explained, with no pressure attached.

Most of the time you'll have a price before he leaves. If something about the job needs checking first, he'll tell you that instead of guessing. No pressure to decide while he's standing there.

  4. The work gets done carefully

Climbed, rigged, and taken down in control — not dropped and hoped.

Grant climbs and rigs rather than muscling trees down with equipment. That protects your lawn, your fence, your roof, and everything else that isn't the tree. It takes longer. It's worth it.

  5. Cleanup, flush stumps, and a better-looking property

The part most companies rush is the part we're known for.

Brush and debris hauled away, stumps cut flush to the ground, yard raked out. When the truck pulls away, the property should look better than it did before the tree was a problem.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Something not covered here? Call (330) 557-2552 and ask Grant directly. He'd rather answer it than have you guess.

Are you insured?
Yes — fully insured, on every job. It's the first thing you should ask any tree company, and anyone who gets cagey about the answer is telling you something.
Do you give free estimates?
Yes, always free. Grant comes to the property, looks at the tree in person, and talks it through with you. Most of the time you'll have a price before he leaves.
Do you do storm and emergency work?
Yes, 24/7. If a tree is on your house or across your driveway, call at whatever hour it happens — the phone gets answered. Say it's an emergency when you call and you'll get a straight answer about how quickly Grant can get there.
Do you do both trimming and removal?
Both. Trimming and pruning is the work Grant enjoys most and does most often, from routine shaping to badly overgrown trees. Removals include the technical ones — trees over roofs, fences, and sheds that have to be rigged down in pieces.
Do you grind stumps?
Not in-house — we don't own a grinder. Every stump we cut is left flush to the ground, and if you want it ground out we'll arrange that through a trusted partner so it's still just one call for you. We'd rather tell you that plainly than pretend it's our machine.
What areas do you serve?
We're based in Windham and cover Portage County and the surrounding areas, including Kent, Ravenna, Streetsboro, Aurora, Mantua, Garrettsville, and Newton Falls. Grant travels up to about an hour in any direction, so if you're outside the county it's still worth a call.
Are you going to make a mess of my yard?
No — this is the part we're known for. Brush and debris get hauled away, stumps are cut flush, and the yard gets raked out before we leave. Cleanup is part of the job, not an add-on.
How do estimates work?
Grant comes out, looks at the tree, checks the access and where limbs can safely come down, and gives you a clear number — usually right there. If something needs checking before he can quote it honestly, he'll tell you that rather than guess. No pressure to decide on the spot.
How soon can you come out?
Call and ask — it depends on the week and on what else is scheduled. Emergency and storm work gets priority and is handled around the clock. For regular trimming and removals, Grant will give you a realistic timeframe instead of an optimistic one.
How much does tree removal cost?
It depends on the tree, which is why we don't publish a price list. Size matters, but so does what's under it, how healthy the wood is, and whether a bucket or a climber can reach it. A small open-yard removal and a dead oak leaning over a garage are different jobs. The estimate is free, Grant looks at the tree in person, and most people have their number before he leaves the driveway.
Does homeowners insurance cover tree removal?
Often, when the tree has hit something: a roof, a garage, a fence. Every policy reads differently, so check with your insurance company before assuming either way. What we can do is give you a clear written estimate for the work, which is what your adjuster is going to ask for anyway.
Who is responsible for a fallen tree?
In most cases in Ohio, the damage is handled by the insurance on the property where the tree landed, even if the trunk stood next door. It can change when a tree was already dead and the owner knew it. We're not insurance people and won't pretend to be. Call your carrier for the coverage question, and call us for the tree.
What counts as a tree emergency?
A tree or limb on your house, garage, car, or power line. A trunk across your driveway. A big limb that cracked in the storm and is hanging over something you care about. If it can't wait until morning, call now. The phone gets answered at any hour, and Grant will tell you honestly whether it needs him tonight or at eight the next morning.
Do I need an arborist or a tree service?
Depends what the tree needs. If you want a written diagnosis of a sick tree or a report for a dispute, that's arborist consulting work. If a tree needs to be trimmed, pruned, or taken down, you need a crew that climbs and cuts, and that's us. Grant has spent ten years in the trees, and if what you really need is a diagnosis rather than a saw, he'll say so.
Why not just leave the stump?
You can, and plenty of people do. We cut every stump flush to the ground, so you're not left with a knee-high post in the lawn. The case for grinding it out: stumps sprout suckers, they're hard on mower blades, and they're where carpenter ants like to set up. If you want the stump gone completely, say so and we'll arrange the grinding through our partner with the same one call.
Is tree work as dangerous as it looks?
It's genuinely dangerous work, which is exactly why it's worth hiring out. Grant has been doing it for ten years, he's fully insured, and he's never damaged a property. The risk is real — the point of hiring a professional is that it's his risk to manage, not yours, and it's managed with training, rigging, and a lot of experience reading trees.

Still not sure? Call (330) 557-2552 and ask.
